Lutsen Home Base Ski Resort Tour

"Tour of the home base of Lutsen Ski Resort in Lutsen (Cook County), Minnesota on Saturday, January 31st of 2009. It was a very foggy day, but the temperatures (around 25 F and over 40 in the cities!) were warmer than it has been."

-Celebrating my younger bro's 30th birthday at Lutsen. We stayed at Temperance Landing (10 miles south west in Schroeder-see photos) for the weekend. It was a very foggy day as you can see on the photos down below. However, it probably was the warmest day in the past several weeks. The Twin Cities had close to a high of 45 above zero. I believe it was around 25 in Lutsen due to the "lake effect" weather in this particular geographic location along the North Shore of Lake Superior.

Lutsen Mountains From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"...is a downhill ski and snowboard area located on the North Shore region in Cook County, Minnesota, USA.
Lutsen is one of the northernmost ski areas in the United States outside of Alaska. It is located in the rugged Sawtooth Mountains, part of the Superior Highlands on the north shore of Lake Superior. Lutsen receives natural snow, at times lake effect snow from the lake at its foot, and also has snowmaking equipment. The ski season extends from November into mid-April, longer than most other resorts in the Upper Midwest.
Lutsen has four mountains, named Eagle, Uller, Mystery, and Moose Mountains. Eagle should not be confused with Eagle Mountain, the highest point in Minnesota, which is actually in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.
In 1988, Lutsen Mountains installed a German-made PHB Hall gondola to provide access between the base area and Moose Mountain. The gondola is the first, and currently the only, gondola in a mid-American ski resort....

" The Midwest's Largest and Highest Ski Area
Lutsen Mountains is located near Lake Superior and is the largest and highest ski area in mid-America.
The four mountains, interconnected by lifts and trails spread over 1,000 acres, are similar in scale to some Western areas.
Lutsen consists of four mountains with 87 runs on 462 skiable acres, a 988-foot area vertical rise, and an 825 foot lift-serviced vertical rise.
It benefits from the natural snow generated from storms off Lake Superior and boasts the Midwest's largest snowmaking system. Lutsen also has mid-America's only mountain gondola.
Intermediates will enjoy the variety of trails, and experts will not be disappointed. Beginners are offered their own learning area on Ullr Mountain.
Cross-country skiers will find 22 km of groomed and tracked trails.
Amenities at the area include a rental shop, a ski school for all ages and abilities, chalet, and a restaurant.
Lodging options are plentiful, from slopeside condominiums to bed and breakfasts..
To get to Lutsen Mountains from the south or west, take I-35 to Duluth, then Highway 61 Northeast for 90 miles. "
